The Israel Competition Authority has notified El Al that it intends to fine the airline for exploiting its monopoly by charging excessive and unfair prices during the initial months of the war. The proposed penalty amounts to 121 million shekels, which is the maximum allowed by law. This decision follows an investigation that found El Al was the sole provider of flights to and from Israel from October 2023 to May 2024, during which it imposed high fares. The airline is expected to contest the sanction in a hearing, and any fine collected would be directed to the state.
