The Jewish Council of Australia has admitted that its recent full-page newspaper advertisement opposing Israeli President Isaac Herzog's visit included several offensive and historically problematic names among the listed signatories. The ad, published in major Australian newspapers, featured hundreds of names, but some were found to be vulgar phrases and the names of notorious Nazi concentration camp collaborators.
The Council explained that the rapid influx of submissions made it difficult to verify authenticity, and despite multiple review processes, a handful of false and offensive entries 'slipped through the cracks.' These names have since been removed from the published list. The Council emphasized that the vast majority of signatories were legitimate and that some questionable names were genuine Jewish individuals.
It remains unclear whether the Council will issue a corrected list or further clarification. The organisation, founded in early 2024, represents a small minority of Australian Jews with anti-Zionist and pro-Palestinian views, contrasting with the broader community's strong identification with Israel.
