The European Union's top diplomats met in Brussels with Nikolay Mladenov, director of the Board of Peace, to discuss efforts to secure and rebuild the war-damaged Gaza Strip. Mladenov, a former Bulgarian politician and United Nations diplomat selected by United States President Donald Trump to lead the initiative, briefed officials on humanitarian conditions and the board's stabilization strategy.
European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said the bloc wants to play an active role in Gaza's peace process and contribute to humanitarian and stabilization efforts. She welcomed Mladenov's assessment that cooperation with European partners is necessary to improve conditions on the ground.
However, internal divisions remain within the European Union. One member state blocked new sanctions on Israeli settlers that had been agreed upon by the rest of the bloc. Plans to train Palestinian police in Gaza are also pending approval from Israel, highlighting ongoing political and diplomatic challenges.
