The International Committee of the Red Cross transferred eight Palestinians from Israeli detention to the Gaza Strip on Monday. They were taken through the Karm Abu Salem border crossing to Shuhada Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir Al-Balah, where they were reunited with their families.
The organization has not been able to visit Palestinian detainees in Israeli detention centers since October 2023, leaving the fate and whereabouts of many detainees from Gaza unknown, according to the Palestinian Wafa news agency. The Red Cross emphasized that under international humanitarian law, detainees must be treated humanely, held in proper conditions, and allowed contact with their families.
According to the Jerusalem-based rights group HaMoked, Israel is currently holding about 9,245 Palestinian prisoners, including 358 individuals detained without charge or trial under administrative detention.
