Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi became the first Indian leader to address the Israeli Knesset, where he strongly condemned the October 7, 2023 attacks and described the actions of Hamas as barbaric. He expressed solidarity with Israel, saying India stands with Israel in this moment and beyond, and stressed that no cause can justify the murder of civilians or terrorism. Recalling the Mumbai attacks of 2008, in which Israeli citizens were also killed, he underlined India’s consistent policy of zero tolerance against terrorism and called for sustained and coordinated global action.
On the conflict in Gaza, Modi said that while the road to peace is not easy, India supports dialogue, peace and stability in the region. He endorsed the peace initiative backed by the United Nations Security Council, saying it offers the promise of a just and durable peace, including by addressing the Palestinian issue. He also praised the Abraham Accords as a courageous step that brought new hope to the region and urged that spirit to be sustained.
Modi highlighted the growing strategic partnership between India and Israel, describing it as vital not only for both nations but also for global stability and prosperity. He pointed to expanding trade, ongoing negotiations for a free trade agreement, cooperation in defence and security, and deeper collaboration in initiatives such as the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor and the four nation grouping of India, Israel, United States and United Arab Emirates. He said a stronger partnership would unlock untapped economic potential and reinforce shared interests in an uncertain world.
