Instagram to warn parents when teens search for suicide terms

Instagram will begin alerting parents when teenagers repeatedly search for content related to suicide or self-harm, as its parent company Meta faces growing legal scrutiny over youth safety. The notifications will roll out in the coming weeks in the United States, Britain, Australia and Canada, with expansion to other regions planned for later in 2026.

Parents who use the platform's supervision tools will receive alerts through email, text message, WhatsApp and within the app itself. The notifications will also include expert resources to help families navigate sensitive conversations.

The platform already blocks searches for suicide and self-harm terms and redirects users to support services. The new system is designed to flag cases where teenagers repeatedly attempt such searches, even after being redirected. Meta said it worked with its advisory group on suicide and self-harm to set cautious thresholds for triggering alerts, acknowledging some warnings may be issued without serious cause for concern.
