A new JL Partners and Daily Mail poll finds that Americans are deeply divided and largely uneasy about the prospect of military action against Iran as President Donald Trump signals he may be nearing a decision. Just 32 percent support the use of force, while 37 percent oppose it, and 54 percent say the possibility of war frightens them. Support is far stronger among Trump voters than Democratic voters.
Many Americans question the motives behind a potential strike. While 43 percent believe the main goal would be to destroy Iran's nuclear facilities, 35 percent think access to Iran's oil reserves is the primary driver. Fewer respondents believe the objective would be stabilizing the Middle East or helping the Iranian people.
More respondents believe the United States, Iran, and the world would be worse off after a strike than better off. There is also limited support for deploying ground forces, and only one in four parents with military-aged sons would back going to war. The poll suggests Trump could face political consequences, with more voters saying military action would worsen their view of him than improve it.
