Iran delays naming a new leader out of security concerns, officials say.

Iran has delayed naming a new supreme leader, citing security concerns as fighting with Israel and the United States intensifies. The Revolutionary Guards launched drones and missiles toward Tel Aviv, while Israeli strikes hit targets in Beirut's Dahiya district, causing building collapses and displacing hundreds. Fears are growing in southern Lebanon of a broader Israeli assault.

Iran's foreign minister warned that the conflict could become a quagmire for those pursuing it. United States and Israeli officials, however, said their campaign has significantly weakened Iran's military capabilities, reporting sharp declines in Iranian missile and drone attacks. The United States defense secretary said weapons stockpiles were sufficient to sustain ongoing operations.

President Donald Trump said he should have a role in selecting Iran's next leader and called Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the slain Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, an unacceptable choice. European nations have increased military deployments in the Middle East to protect citizens and trade routes, while global leaders monitor potential economic fallout, particularly in oil markets.

Meanwhile, political divisions surfaced in Washington after the House narrowly blocked a measure to limit the president's war powers. The State Department has begun evacuating American citizens from the region, and deadly incidents at sea and on the battlefield have further escalated tensions.
