Iraq’s federal government and the autonomous Kurdistan region have affirmed that the country must not be used as a launchpad for attacks against neighboring states. The statement followed reports that militants could attempt to cross from Iraqi territory into Iran.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and Kurdistan regional President Nechirvan Barzani discussed the issue in a phone call, agreeing that Iraqi land should not serve as a starting point for operations targeting nearby countries.
The remarks came after Iran warned it would target all facilities in the autonomous region if exiled Iranian Kurdish militants were allowed to enter its territory from Iraq.
