French President Emmanuel Macron condemned what he called an 'unacceptable attack' on United Nations peacekeeping forces in southern Lebanon after two peacekeepers from Ghana were critically wounded in a missile strike on their position in Qawzah. Macron said France was working with partners to prevent further regional escalation and stressed the stabilising role played by the United Nations mission.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun accused Israel of carrying out the strike, as tensions intensified following recent United States and Israeli attacks on Iran that have reverberated across the region. Macron emphasised that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon and Syria must be respected.
France, which contributes around 700 troops to the United Nations mission, said it would remain engaged in the operation. The peacekeeping force has long served as a buffer between Israel and Lebanon and has been assisting the Lebanese army in dismantling Hezbollah infrastructure near the border. The mission is expected to withdraw all troops from Lebanon by mid-2027.
