United States B-1 Lancer strategic bombers, described as the fastest in the American Air Force fleet and capable of carrying 24 cruise missiles, have begun arriving at Royal Air Force Fairford in Gloucestershire. The deployment follows approval from Prime Minister Keir Starmer after President Donald Trump publicly expressed dissatisfaction with the United Kingdom’s initial hesitation.
The move signals Britain’s formal entry into the United States campaign against Iran. In addition to granting use of Royal Air Force Fairford, the government has also authorized operations from the joint United Kingdom and United States base on Diego Garcia.
Meanwhile, the aircraft carrier Prince of Wales has been placed on a five-day readiness notice for potential deployment to the Middle East. The United States defense secretary said military strikes on Iran were about to surge dramatically, though Starmer told Parliament that Britain does not support regime change carried out from the skies and has declined to directly join the strikes.
