Iran's Assembly of Experts announced it will convene within a day to choose a successor to former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to Iranian media. One of the 88 clerical members confirmed that the meeting would take place soon, as the country moves to fill its highest political and religious position.
The announcement came after Israeli strikes reportedly targeted buildings in Qom and Tehran used by the Assembly of Experts. Iranian news agencies said the compound in Qom was flattened, and another building in the capital was also hit overnight. Following the attacks, reports indicated that the selection process would proceed through virtual meetings.
Iranian media reported internal divisions within the assembly over the potential appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei, the former leader's second son. Commanders from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were said to have pressured members to support his candidacy. In the absence of a confirmed new leader, authority over key military decisions has been transferred to an interim leadership council, according to state media.
