Iran's Assembly of Experts has selected a new supreme leader, according to several members of the clerical body, though the individual's name has not yet been publicly announced. Ahmad Alamolhoda said the vote has taken place and a leader has been chosen, adding that the secretariat will reveal the name later.
Multiple members confirmed that a majority decision had been reached. One member indicated that Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late supreme leader Ali Khamenei, could be the successor. Ali Khamenei had held the powerful position since 1989, overseeing the country's political and religious direction.
The role of supreme leader is Iran's highest authority, with final say over all state matters. The selection comes amid comments from United States President Donald Trump, who claimed he should have a role in the process and dismissed Mojtaba Khamenei as a 'lightweight'. Iranian officials have firmly rejected any suggestion of foreign involvement in choosing the new leader.
