Here's What Happened in the Conflict on Sunday

Iran named Mojtaba Khamenei as the successor to his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, following the supreme leader's death, according to a statement from senior clerics carried by state media. The announcement came as fighting between Iran, Israel and the United States continued to escalate. The Defense Department said a seventh American service member had died from injuries sustained in an Iranian strike on a Saudi military base.

The overall death toll since the start of the war has reached at least 1,759 people, most of them in Iran. Iran's ambassador to the United Nations said that at least 1,332 civilians, including many children, were killed in attacks by Israel and the United States. Israeli strikes on fuel depots near Tehran ignited massive oil fires, sending thick, toxic smoke over the capital, while the United States warned civilians to remain indoors ahead of possible strikes on densely populated areas.

In Lebanon, Israeli attacks continued, including a strike on a hotel in central Beirut that killed at least four people. The country's health ministry said 394 people have been killed so far, including dozens of children and medical workers, and several hospitals have been damaged or forced out of service. Tensions also spread across the Persian Gulf, with Saudi Arabia reporting its first civilian deaths and Bahrain accusing Iran of damaging a key water facility, claims that Iranian and American officials disputed.
