Carney Chukwuemeka has switched his international allegiance from England to Austria ahead of this summer's World Cup. The 22-year-old midfielder, formerly of Chelsea and Aston Villa, was part of the England youth side that won the European Under 19 Championship in 2022, scoring in the final.
Now playing for Borussia Dortmund after a permanent move last year, Chukwuemeka has featured regularly in the German top division this season. Having never made a senior appearance for England, he was eligible to change nations and could soon feature for Austria in upcoming friendly matches.
Born in Vienna to Nigerian parents and raised in Northampton, Chukwuemeka began his career at Aston Villa before moving to Chelsea in 2022. After struggling for consistent opportunities in London, he revived his career in Germany, and now looks set to represent Austria at their first World Cup in nearly three decades.
