Heritage Minister Amichay Eliyahu has demanded that Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara transfer all materials related to the Justice Ministry Pardons Department's opinion on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's request for a pardon in his corruption trial. His request follows Justice Minister Yariv Levin's decision to delegate his authority in the pardon process to Eliyahu due to a potential conflict of interest stemming from his close ties to Netanyahu.
Although the justice minister does not shape the Pardons Department's legal opinion, the department operates under his authority, and the minister is responsible for reviewing its materials and forwarding its position to the president's office. Eliyahu claims the attorney general has delayed providing the legal position paper, despite the delegation of authority taking place only a day earlier.
In a letter, Eliyahu said the alleged delays undermine the integrity of the Attorney General's Office and insisted he must review the matter thoroughly and without further postponement. The attorney general's office has declined to comment on the accusations, and Eliyahu's office has not clarified the basis for his complaint.
