Iran's new supreme leader injured but 'safe', says president's son

Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has been injured but is 'safe and sound', according to Yousef Pezeshkian, the son of President Masoud Pezeshkian. The statement marks the first official comment on his condition since he was appointed following the killing of his father, Ali Khamenei, in an air strike at the start of the war between the United States, Israel and Iran. His absence from public view had fueled speculation about his health and whereabouts.

Reports indicate that he suffered leg injuries in the strike that killed his father, as well as his mother and wife, but remains alert and is sheltering in a secure location with limited communication. State media previously referred to him as a 'wounded veteran' of the conflict without providing further details. His image has appeared across Tehran on billboards and posters displayed by supporters at pro government rallies.

Despite public shows of loyalty from the armed forces and allied groups abroad, opposition has also surfaced, with anti government slogans heard in parts of the capital. Analysts suggest he is likely to remain out of sight for security reasons, as he is considered a prime target for assassination. Observers believe he may delegate day to day governance and wartime leadership to senior political and security figures while consolidating his position.
