United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has arrived in Beirut for what he described as a 'visit of solidarity' with the people of Lebanon, as the country faces mounting casualties and displacement linked to the regional conflict. More than 687 people have reportedly been killed since Hezbollah drew Lebanon into Israel's confrontation with Iran earlier this month.
During his visit, Guterres is expected to highlight the worsening humanitarian crisis, with over 800,000 people displaced by the violence. He said that the Lebanese people 'did not choose this war' and pledged that the United Nations would work tirelessly toward securing a peaceful future for Lebanon and the wider region.
An emergency funding appeal is set to be launched as part of the visit to address urgent humanitarian needs across the country.
