The United States is dispatching a Marine expeditionary unit of about 2,200 troops to the Middle East aboard three Navy ships, according to a media report citing unnamed officials. The unit, which is permanently stationed in Japan, has been ordered to move to the region amid escalating tensions linked to the war involving Iran.
Although officials have previously ruled out sending ground troops, they have recently avoided firmly dismissing the possibility. The Marine unit can provide a range of capabilities, including ground forces, amphibious operations, and aviation support, rather than necessarily deploying directly into combat.
The unit also includes advanced fighter aircraft and tiltrotor aircraft, expanding the military options available to commanders as the situation in the region develops.
