Israel and Lebanon are expected to hold direct talks in the coming days, marking their first direct engagement since the outbreak of the Iran war, which has drawn Lebanon further into the conflict. The discussions may take place in Paris or Cyprus and are expected to involve Jared Kushner, son-in-law of United States President Donald Trump, alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's confidant Ron Dermer.
The negotiations are anticipated to focus on ending the fighting in Lebanon and addressing the disarmament of the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah. The group began firing on Israel on March 2, saying it was retaliating for the killing of Iran's supreme leader at the start of the war between the United States, Israel and Iran.
Since then, Israel has carried out extensive air strikes against Hezbollah, while the group has launched hundreds of rockets into Israel. Lebanon's health ministry reports that 826 people, including women, children and paramedics, have been killed in the strikes, with more than 2,000 others wounded and hundreds of thousands displaced.
