The leadership of the Kinahan crime cartel is effectively trapped in Dubai as regional conflict intensifies, with Iranian missile and drone attacks adding new pressure. Christy Kinahan Senior and his sons Daniel and Christopher Junior have remained in the United Arab Emirates for years, and Irish police believe they have no plans to leave voluntarily. Their past links in Iran, including connections to Hezbollah, have further complicated their position as tensions escalate in the Gulf.
Irish authorities are awaiting a decision from the Director of Public Prosecutions on whether to bring formal charges, with investigators recommending that Daniel Kinahan face accusations including murder and directing an organised crime group. Extradition proceedings cannot begin without that approval. Meanwhile, financial sanctions imposed by the United States in 2022, along with multi million dollar rewards for information leading to their arrest, have severely restricted the family’s movements and business dealings.
Security sources suggest the United Arab Emirates may be reassessing its tolerance of the cartel figures as it seeks stronger ties with the United States during the regional crisis. Reports also indicate the family previously explored relocating to Russia with newly obtained travel documents but abandoned the plan over concerns about the war in Ukraine. Former senior Irish police officials have said they believe it is inevitable the Kinahan leaders will eventually be returned to Ireland to face justice.
