Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will visit the United Kingdom on Tuesday as Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer seeks to keep international attention on the war in Ukraine amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. Starmer warned that rising oil prices caused by the regional crisis risk creating a financial 'windfall' for Russia, potentially strengthening Vladimir Putin’s war effort despite existing sanctions.
The surge in energy prices follows military exchanges involving Iran, Israel and Gulf states, which have disrupted global supplies. The United States recently eased certain restrictions on Russian oil already in transit in an effort to stabilise markets. Meanwhile, increased demand for air defence systems in the Middle East could limit available supplies for Ukraine.
The United Kingdom has continued to provide military assistance to Kyiv, including thousands of drones, artillery rounds and small arms ammunition. Starmer reaffirmed his government’s commitment to Ukraine, stressing that the conflict in Europe must not be overshadowed by events elsewhere and pledging steadfast support during Zelensky’s visit.
