A plastic surgeon who stabbed a professional rival and attempted to burn down his home has been permanently struck off the medical register. Jonathan Peter Brooks, 62, carried out the attack on fellow surgeon Graeme Perks at his home in Nottinghamshire in January 2021, driven by what a tribunal described as a long‑held professional grudge.
Brooks broke into the property at night wearing a camouflage suit and balaclava, armed with a crowbar, petrol, matches and a knife. After dousing the house with fuel, he was confronted by Mr Perks and stabbed him multiple times in the abdomen, causing catastrophic injuries. Mr Perks lost a significant amount of blood and survived only due to emergency surgery.
Brooks was convicted of attempted murder, attempted arson with intent to endanger life and possession of a knife, and was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 22 years. A medical tribunal has now ruled that his actions were premeditated and posed an ongoing high risk to the public, noting his lack of remorse or insight.
The attack followed disciplinary proceedings at their workplace in which Mr Perks had been involved. In a statement, Mr Perks said he held no bitterness despite the profound physical and psychological impact on him and his family, describing his survival as a rare and treasured second life.
