US opens new front in battle to reopen Strait of Hormuz

President Donald Trump has ordered United States forces to intensify military operations aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz, as fighting with Iran enters its fourth week. American aircraft and helicopters are targeting Iranian fast attack boats, drones and coastal positions along the southern coastline in an effort to secure the strategic waterway, through which about one fifth of the world’s oil supply passes. Pentagon officials said more than 120 Iranian naval vessels have been destroyed, but clearing the strait could take weeks.

Iran has retaliated with explosive-laden unmanned boats, missiles and aerial drones, while continuing to export millions of barrels of oil despite the conflict. Oil prices have surged more than 40 percent since the war began, rising above 100 dollars per barrel. Tehran has threatened to block oil shipments bound for the United States and its allies, although Washington has allowed Iranian tankers to transit the strait to help stabilize global markets.

Several major powers including Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the Netherlands said they are prepared to contribute to efforts to ensure safe passage, though some emphasized that participation would follow a ceasefire rather than involve immediate military support. European leaders have called for de escalation and protection of energy infrastructure, as concerns over supply disruptions continue to rattle global markets.
