Iran's Missiles Strike Far-Off Diego Garcia Base, but U.S. Remains Out of Range

Iran launched two missiles toward the joint United States and British military base on Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, roughly 2,500 miles away, raising fresh questions about the true range of Tehran’s weapons. According to a United States official, one missile failed mid-flight and the other was intercepted by an American warship, resulting in no damage.

The attempted strike highlighted the limits of Iran’s long-range missile capabilities. Analysts noted that while the distance exceeded what is typically associated with Iran’s arsenal, the failed attack demonstrated that accuracy and reliability decrease significantly at extended ranges. Despite past warnings that Iran was developing missiles capable of reaching the United States, current assessments indicate it does not yet possess that capability.

Western military officials suggested the launch may have been intended to pressure the United States and its allies to stretch their defensive resources beyond the Middle East. The strike occurred shortly before Britain agreed to allow expanded American use of its bases, including Diego Garcia, underscoring the strategic importance of the location.
