Israeli airstrikes hit Beirut's southern suburbs on Monday, targeting what the military described as Hezbollah infrastructure. Smoke was seen rising over the area after multiple strikes, and residents had been warned to evacuate beforehand. An earlier strike in the upscale district of Hazmieh killed at least one person and was said to have targeted a member of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards' foreign operations arm.
The Israeli military also said it captured two Hezbollah members in southern Lebanon, claiming they had been preparing to fire an anti tank missile before surrendering. They were transferred to Israeli territory for questioning. Hezbollah responded by announcing dozens of attacks on Israeli troops and positions along the border.
The escalation follows weeks of cross border violence that began after Hezbollah launched rockets toward Israel in early March. Since then, Israeli strikes across Lebanon have killed more than one thousand people, and ground troops have entered southern areas. Israel has also targeted bridges and key infrastructure, saying they were being used for militant activity, while warning that its campaign against Hezbollah 'has only just begun.'
