AIPAC pushes back after Democratic presidential hopefuls reject its support

A prominent pro Israel lobby group pushed back after several Democratic figures considering bids for the United States presidency publicly rejected its support. The response followed a news report that a number of lawmakers were distancing themselves from the organization as they weigh potential campaigns.

In a statement, the group said it has never donated directly to presidential campaigns and emphasized that millions of Democratic members support candidates who reflect their values, including backing a strong relationship between the United States and Israel. It argued that excluding pro Israel Democrats is wrong and undemocratic.

Those who have rejected support from the group include senators, governors and a former mayor who are seen as possible contenders in the next presidential race. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, who is Jewish, also said he has never taken or sought support from the organization.
