Syrian authorities announced that they have discovered and closed a tunnel near the village of Hosh Al-Sayyid Ali, west of Homs, linking Syrian and Lebanese territory. Officials said the tunnel was allegedly used for smuggling activities by Lebanese militias and has now been sealed by the army.
The area along Lebanon’s eastern border with Syria is known as a stronghold of the Iran-backed group Hezbollah, which is currently engaged in conflict with Israel. Hezbollah had previously supported former Syrian president Bashar Assad, who was overthrown in December 2024 by an Islamist coalition opposed to the group.
Following Assad’s removal, Hezbollah’s supply routes through Syria have been disrupted. Both Lebanese and Syrian authorities have since intensified efforts to curb smuggling and tighten control over the porous border between the two countries.
