The United Nations human rights chief has called on Israel to repeal a law that mandates the death penalty for Palestinians convicted in military courts of carrying out deadly attacks. He said the legislation violates international humanitarian law and Israel's legal obligations.
Volker Turk stated that the measure raises serious concerns about due process violations and described it as deeply discriminatory. He emphasized that the law provides no opportunity for pardon and requires executions to be carried out within 90 days.
According to Turk, these provisions are inconsistent with international legal standards and undermine fundamental rights protections. He urged Israeli authorities to promptly repeal the legislation.
