Amazon Web Services said its cloud facilities in the United Arab Emirates suffered major power and connectivity disruptions after unidentified objects struck a data center, sparking a fire and forcing authorities to cut electricity to two server clusters. The outage affected services in both the United Arab Emirates and neighboring Bahrain, with full restoration expected to take many hours.

The incident occurred the same day Iran launched drones and missiles at Gulf states in retaliation for strikes that killed its supreme leader. While Amazon did not confirm the source of the objects, a confirmed strike would mark the first known time a major United States technology company's data center has been disabled by military action.

The disruption affected about a dozen core cloud services, prompting Amazon to advise customers to back up critical data and shift operations to other regions. The event has raised concerns about the vulnerability of expanding technology infrastructure in the Gulf, where global firms are investing heavily in advanced computing facilities.

Experts warned that in modern conflicts, adversaries may increasingly target digital infrastructure such as data centers, energy supplies, and fiber networks, rather than traditional oil facilities. Other major technology companies operating in the United Arab Emirates did not immediately comment on the incident.
