Technology companies including Google, Microsoft, Meta, Oracle, xAI, OpenAI and Amazon have pledged to cover the power costs linked to their expanding artificial intelligence data centres. The commitment, announced at the White House, comes as President Donald Trump faces mounting pressure over rising household electricity bills ahead of midterm elections.

Under a 'ratepayer protection pledge', the firms agreed to finance new power generation capacity, pay for infrastructure upgrades and negotiate electricity rate structures with state utilities. The administration says the plan will help prevent higher costs for households, though officials acknowledge it may take time to deliver results.

Energy analysts question how the pledge will be enforced, citing the complex web of regulators, grid operators and state authorities involved in electricity markets. Critics argue the burden is on the administration to show the agreement is more than symbolic, particularly as residential power prices have continued to rise and overdue utility debt has increased.

Broader pressures, including higher natural gas prices and global supply disruptions linked to conflict in the Middle East, could further complicate efforts to lower energy bills. The rapid growth of data centres has added strain to the electric grid, intensifying concerns about whether consumers will ultimately bear the cost.
