In a Riskier Era, China Bets on Technology to Resist U.S. Pressure

China's leader Xi Jinping is accelerating investment in advanced technologies and military capabilities as rivalry with the United States deepens. Facing mounting economic pressure, trade tensions and displays of American military force abroad, Beijing is framing the coming years as a decisive period in which technological innovation will determine national strength.

At a major legislative meeting in Beijing, officials were expected to endorse a five year plan focused on emerging industries such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, hydrogen and fusion energy, brain computer interfaces, advanced robotics and sixth generation wireless networks. The strategy aims to reduce China's reliance on foreign technology, particularly advanced semiconductors, and to overcome what Mr. Xi has described as critical bottlenecks.

Alongside these economic ambitions, China announced a seven percent increase in military spending, continuing a steady expansion of its armed forces. While total defense spending remains far below that of the United States, Chinese policymakers argue that long term advantage will depend more on dominance in next generation industries than on raw military expenditure.

Analysts say Beijing believes Washington will continue efforts to constrain China's technological rise, reinforcing the push for self reliance. However, large scale industrial policies could intensify global trade tensions, as increased production capacity may spill into overseas markets and strain relations with trading partners.
