Pakistan's religious party Jamaat-e-Islami has announced nationwide protests on Friday against what it described as aggression by the United States and Israel against Iran. The party also called on the government in Islamabad to withdraw from a peace body formed under United States President Donald Trump, calling it illegitimate.
The announcement comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East after airstrikes by the United States and Israel targeted Iran following months of negotiations over Tehran's nuclear program. Iran confirmed that its Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in the strikes and responded with drone and missile attacks on United States military installations in the Gulf.
Jamaat-e-Islami chief Naeem ur Rehman expressed solidarity with Iran and urged both the government and opposition in Pakistan to openly condemn the attacks. He also reiterated demands for a transparent investigation into the deaths of 10 protesters who stormed the United States consulate in Karachi, citing reports that United States Marines had fired during the incident.
The party appealed for peaceful participation in the planned demonstrations, warning that Israel could pose a future threat to Pakistan. Jamaat-e-Islami has previously organized large rallies in major Pakistani cities in opposition to Israel's military operations in Gaza.
