Ukraine has proposed a pause in attacks on energy infrastructure over the upcoming Orthodox Easter holiday, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. The offer, conveyed to Moscow through the United States, would see both sides halt strikes on power facilities if Russia agrees. There was no immediate response from the Kremlin, and previous ceasefire attempts have largely failed.
The proposal comes as the war enters its fifth year, with fighting continuing along the roughly 1,250 kilometer front line. Zelenskyy expressed skepticism that Russia would accept the pause, noting that Moscow may be benefiting from higher oil prices linked to the war involving Iran. Efforts led by the United States to mediate talks have stalled as attention shifts to the Middle East.
Meanwhile, both sides continue targeting critical infrastructure. Russia has intensified attacks on Ukraine’s power grid and public transport, including a drone strike on a bus in Nikopol that killed four civilians and injured 15. Additional strikes in other regions killed several more civilians, including a child. Ukraine has expanded long range drone attacks on Russian oil facilities, aiming to undermine a key source of revenue for Moscow.
