Britain's foreign minister said the United Kingdom strongly wants the current Middle East ceasefire to be extended to Lebanon, citing deep concern over escalating Israeli attacks and the humanitarian consequences, including mass displacement. She emphasized the need to reduce violence and prevent further suffering in the country.
Her remarks came as Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited the United Arab Emirates as part of a Gulf tour aimed at reinforcing the ceasefire and encouraging a path toward lasting peace. He previously met Saudi Arabia's crown prince and discussed coordinated international efforts to stabilize the region.
The United Kingdom is also pressing for the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, which has seen severely limited shipping despite a ceasefire between the United States and Iran. British officials stressed that international shipping must move freely and without tolls, supporting proposals to assist trapped vessels and thousands of stranded seafarers.
Iran announced alternative maritime routes due to the risk of sea mines, while Britain continues diplomatic and military coordination with more than 30 countries to restore confidence in the key waterway, which is vital for global supplies of oil, liquefied natural gas, and fertilizer.
