Work on an 80-metre wind turbine in Bishop's Castle could begin next summer as the town looks for alternatives to oil heating. Planning permission was granted last year, but construction depends on reaching an agreement to connect the turbine to the local power grid.
The project was originally intended to supply a community heat network, but rising construction costs and a lack of grant funding forced those plans to be abandoned. The turbine is now expected to generate one megawatt of electricity, enough to power up to 650 homes, with discounted energy offered to residents through a proposed 'energy club'.
Organisers say the scheme could cut up to 1,300 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year over its 30-year lifespan by replacing oil-based heating systems. However, difficulties in securing a connection point mean the project could be delayed until 2028 if an agreement cannot be reached soon.
