Israel's High Court is hearing four petitions seeking the removal of National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, in a case backed by the country's attorney general. The petitions argue that Ben Gvir has undermined the independence of the police and improperly influenced law enforcement operations.
Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara has asked the court to compel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to explain why he has not dismissed the minister. She accused Ben Gvir of abusing his authority to interfere in sensitive investigations and violating democratic principles.
Ben Gvir has rejected the accusations, openly defending his role in shaping police policy and appointments. He criticized the attorney general and judiciary, calling the proceedings a threat to democracy. Other senior ministers, including the justice and foreign ministers, have also denounced the court's involvement, while Netanyahu argued that the court lacks authority to intervene in ministerial appointments.
