Shooting at Trump Event in Washington
An armed man was taken into custody after rushing a dinner for the White House press corps attended by President Donald Trump in Washington. Officials said the suspect had written a manifesto and sent messages criticizing the administration while outlining plans for violence. A preliminary review indicated that members of the administration, likely including the president, were the intended targets.
The suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, was carrying knives, a shotgun and a handgun. Security footage showed him running through the hotel shortly after Trump, the vice president and the first lady had taken their seats. Guests took cover as security agents escorted officials from the room. The suspect faces federal firearm and assault charges.
The incident has renewed concerns about rising political violence in the United States and about security surrounding Trump, who has survived multiple assassination attempts in recent years. Other political figures across the country have also been targeted in deadly attacks, underscoring a broader climate of instability.
