The United States House of Representatives narrowly rejected a resolution that would have required President Donald Trump to withdraw United States forces from the war with Iran unless Congress authorizes further military action. The measure failed by a single vote, 213 to 214, marking another setback for Democrats seeking to limit the president’s war powers.
The vote followed a similar failed effort in the Senate a day earlier and reflects continued Republican support for the president’s military campaign. Democrats have voiced concern that the United States risks becoming deeply involved in another prolonged conflict in the Middle East and have pledged to pursue additional votes on the issue.
Under the War Powers Act of 1973, Congress must declare war or authorize the use of force within 60 days of military engagement, a deadline that arrives at the end of April for the Iran conflict. Lawmakers are pressing the administration to outline a clear plan for concluding the war as previous attempts in both chambers to curb the president’s authority have fallen short.
