Vizhinjam International Seaport missed the opportunity to host container ships stranded en route to the Middle East due to ongoing regional conflict, as the port is currently operating beyond capacity. Construction work is still underway, and the container yard is already handling around 40,000 containers, exceeding its designed limit. As a result, authorities had to decline multiple requests from shipping companies seeking to anchor vessels or unload cargo.
Despite not being fully completed, the port has handled 890 ships and 1.858 million containers so far, reflecting strong and growing demand. At any given time, three to four ships are waiting offshore for berthing slots. The second phase of construction is in progress to expand capacity and allow five large motherships to dock simultaneously.
The recent surge in requests highlights the port's strategic importance as a deepwater facility near a major international shipping route. Political leaders have described the port as a transformative project, suggesting that once expansion is complete, Vizhinjam could emerge as a major global transshipment hub.
