Nike to Cut 1,400 Jobs as Part of Its Turnaround Plan

Nike will cut about 1,400 jobs, primarily in its technology division, as part of a broader turnaround effort aimed at reversing a prolonged sales slump. The reductions mark the company’s second round of layoffs this year and are part of a reorganization designed to operate with greater speed, simplicity and precision.

The world’s largest sportswear company has struggled after shifting too heavily toward lifestyle products and away from performance footwear and apparel. Chief executive Elliott Hill has been working to refocus the brand on sports innovation and accelerate product development, even as the company expects sales to decline this year.

The restructuring affects employees across North America, Europe and Asia, including staff at headquarters in Oregon and at a technology center in India. Changes will also impact factory operations tied to the company’s Air cushioning system and supply chain teams, as Nike seeks to streamline operations, strengthen supplier relationships and improve efficiency across its global business.
