The High Court of Justice has ruled that the Attorney General's Office will oversee efforts to reach a new agreement between Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir regarding his involvement with the Israel Police. The court determined that oversight will not be handled by a representative from the Prime Minister's Office, though Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu may appoint a representative to the negotiating team.
Earlier this month, the court instructed Baharav-Miara and Ben Gvir to draft a new framework aimed at limiting any improper political influence over police operations. The directive followed petitions supported by the attorney general seeking Ben Gvir's dismissal, citing repeated alleged breaches of his commitment to avoid political interference in police matters.
The two officials have until May 3 to report whether they have agreed on a set of guiding principles and to outline any unresolved disagreements. A previous agreement reached in May 2025 reportedly collapsed after the attorney general accused Ben Gvir of undermining it by publicly commenting on active investigations, intervening in promotions for political reasons, and attempting to shape operational police policy.
