Israel has appointed Michael Lotem as its first ambassador to Somaliland, months after formally recognizing the breakaway region’s independence. The appointment was announced by the foreign ministry, marking a significant step in diplomatic ties between the two sides.
Israel recognized Somaliland in December 2025, becoming the first country to do so since the region declared independence from Somalia in 1991 following a civil war. Diplomatic relations were established soon after, and Israel’s foreign minister visited Somaliland in January. In February, Somaliland named Mohamed Hagi as its ambassador to Israel.
Somaliland, which has its own currency, passport and army, occupies a strategic position along the Gulf of Aden but has struggled to gain broad international recognition. Israel’s outreach has drawn criticism from Somalia, which condemned the move as an unauthorized incursion and warned it could fuel separatist movements in the region.
