India eyes global supply chain pivot as $15 billion Google AI hub breaks ground

India has launched a 15 billion dollar Google Cloud India artificial intelligence hub in Visakhapatnam, marking a major step in its push to become a trusted global partner in electronics manufacturing and supply chains. The project, developed with Google Cloud, Adani ConneX and Airtel Nxtra, will feature a one gigawatt hyperscale artificial intelligence data centre built on 600 acres allocated by the Andhra Pradesh government.

Information technology minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said India is rapidly expanding beyond its established strength in information technology services into electronics manufacturing, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, quantum computing and space technologies. He noted that mobile phones are now among the country’s top exports and that nearly half of domestic electronics demand is being met through local production, with commercial semiconductor manufacturing already underway.

The minister urged global technology companies to deepen manufacturing operations in India, including the production of servers, graphics processors and semiconductor components, to strengthen the country’s position in global value chains. He said the Visakhapatnam facility is expected to drive innovation across education, healthcare, logistics, aerospace and agriculture, while reinforcing India’s digital connectivity through subsea cable links to regions including Australia, the Middle East, Europe, Africa and the United States.

Industry leaders described the project as a milestone in India’s digital transformation and a step toward its ambition of becoming a developed economy by 2047, positioning Visakhapatnam as a new digital gateway for the country.
