Iran's highly enriched uranium is likely at Isfahan site, UN nuclear chief says

The head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog says most of Iran’s highly enriched uranium is likely still stored at the Isfahan nuclear complex, despite airstrikes carried out last year and during a 12-day conflict in June 2025 involving the United States and Israel. Satellite imagery reviewed by the agency indicates the material was present at the site when the fighting began and has probably remained there since.

Inspections at Isfahan stopped when the conflict erupted, and inspectors have not yet been able to verify whether the uranium and agency seals remain intact. The watchdog estimates that roughly 200 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 percent purity are stored in tunnels at the site, part of Iran’s total stockpile of more than 440 kilograms enriched to that level.

Satellite images taken just before the war show trucks carrying containers believed to hold highly enriched uranium entering a tunnel at the Isfahan facility. The agency also seeks renewed access to other nuclear sites at Natanz and Fordo. As a signatory to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, Iran is required to allow inspections of its nuclear facilities.
