Michael Needham, a longtime aide to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, has been promoted to assistant to the president and deputy national security adviser, according to a source familiar with the decision. In his new role, Needham will work alongside Rubio, who is serving as both acting national security adviser and the nation’s top diplomat under President Donald Trump.
Needham previously served as Rubio’s chief of staff in the Senate and earlier led Heritage Action for America, a grassroots organization focused on advancing conservative policies. He has remained a close and influential adviser to Rubio during his tenure at the State Department.
Although often operating behind the scenes, Needham has played a part in several high-profile initiatives, including renewed interest in Greenland and facilitating the first direct talks in decades between Israel and Lebanon. His promotion places him in a central position within the White House national security structure.
