Saudi Ambassador to Lebanon Walid Bukhari said that adherence to the 1989 Taif Agreement remains the foundation of any political settlement in Lebanon, stressing the importance of strengthening civil peace and prioritizing wisdom and reason. During meetings with leading Sunni, Shiite and Druze religious figures in Beirut, he reaffirmed Saudi Arabia’s commitment to Lebanon’s unity and its support for the country’s state institutions amid ongoing challenges.
Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Latif Derian praised Saudi Arabia’s role in supporting Lebanon’s stability under exceptional circumstances and said rebuilding the state and restoring its authority across all territory were essential steps toward national recovery. He emphasized confining weapons to the Lebanese army, upholding the Taif accord and reinforcing national unity, while welcoming diplomatic efforts to halt the war and secure a lasting settlement.
In talks with Shiite and Druze leaders, Bukhari expressed optimism about Lebanon’s future and called for agreement among the country’s top leaders to safeguard civil peace. He reiterated that returning to the Taif framework offers broad principles that protect all Lebanese groups without exclusion, while religious leaders highlighted Saudi Arabia’s central role in promoting stability and regional cooperation.
