Axel Springer chief executive Mathias Dopfner told staff that the company’s pro Israel stance is 'non negotiable' and forms part of its core corporate values. Speaking during an internal meeting, he said employees who disagree with the company’s essentials, including support for the right of Israel to exist and opposition to antisemitism, may be better suited to work elsewhere.

The remarks followed a letter from Politico staff expressing concern that Dopfner was using the publication to promote his personal political views. The criticism referenced recent opinion pieces in which he defended Israel’s actions and argued that conflict involving Israel and Iran was crucial to protecting the Western way of life. During the meeting, Dopfner defended his positions and said he intended to continue writing.

The dispute underscores ongoing tensions between editorial staff and the German parent company, which also owns several international media outlets. Axel Springer properties have previously faced scrutiny over their handling of coverage related to Israel and Gaza, with the company consistently pointing to its longstanding corporate values. Incoming Politico editor in chief Jonathan Greenberger said he would safeguard editorial independence while respecting those values.
