The New School in New York City has rejected a vote by its student senate to cut funding and collaboration with the campus chapter of Hillel, a Jewish student organization. The student senate had cited alleged violations of international law related to events connected to the Israel Defense Forces as the reason for its decision.
In response, a university spokesperson stated that the student senate does not have the authority to determine the recognition, funding eligibility, or official status of registered student organizations. The administration affirmed that the Hillel chapter remains in good standing and continues to be eligible for funding.
The university said it is taking immediate steps to address the student senate's action and to ensure it operates within its proper role. It also reiterated its founding commitment to rejecting violence, hate, and discrimination, and to promoting understanding and open dialogue across its community.
