The Pentagon has released 161 previously classified documents detailing reported sightings of unidentified flying objects and unexplained aerial phenomena, following a directive from President Donald Trump. The files, which span decades, include military memos, astronaut transcripts from the Apollo Moon missions, and civilian reports. More documents are expected to be made public.
Transcripts from Apollo 11, Apollo 12, and Apollo 17 missions describe astronauts observing unexplained lights and particles in space. Buzz Aldrin recounted seeing a bright light source during his journey to the Moon, while other astronauts described flashes of light and drifting particles. A recording from the 1965 Gemini 7 mission also captures an astronaut reporting an unidentified object and numerous small particles near the spacecraft.
The release includes civilian accounts dating back to the 1950s, as well as recent reports from 2023 describing hovering metal objects emerging from bright light. Military videos from 2022 recorded in the Middle East show unresolved aerial phenomena, including an oval-shaped object moving rapidly across the sky.
Lawmakers responded with mixed reactions. Some praised the disclosure as an important step toward transparency, while others criticized it as a distraction from more pressing national concerns.
